Meet Bigsley!

This scene comes from a lovely weekend spent with friends on Martha’s Vineyard.

Our friend Christina invited a group of us to her parents’ home, where she grew up, to spend some time on the Vineyard and enjoy a few island traditions—including an amazing lobster bake.

And…it rained for a good portion of the weekend.

So our days became wonderfully lazy, with plenty of time spent simply hanging around the house and enjoying being together.

It was during one of those quiet stretches that I came across Christina’s dog, Bigsley, sound asleep on a bed in one of the bedrooms.

The scene immediately caught my attention. The soft light, the peaceful room, and Bigsley stretched out on the bed reminded me of Andrew Wyeth’s Master Bedroom, with his dog peacefully sleeping on the bed.

We managed to snap a photo without waking Bigsley, and sometime later I turned that photograph into this painting as a gift for Christina.

Because the weekend had been so rainy and gray, I wanted the painting to hold onto that subdued light—the way the room actually felt that day. Bigsley looks completely peaceful and content, and somehow that little moment captured the mood of the entire weekend: quiet, restful, unhurried, and tucked away from the world for a while.

Bigsley on the Bed became a portrait not only of a beloved dog, but of one of those simple moments that can unexpectedly come to represent an entire place and time.
